Windoro window cleaning robot review

Cleaning windows is almost like cleaning the gutters: we don’t have to do it often, but it is unpleasant and can be dangerous. This chore is a good target for robots to take over, and we already have two candidates for the job. We have had the chance to use the South Korean Windoro for a while to see how it can handle the task.

Window cleaning poses totally different problems than floor cleaning. The area to clean is vertical instead of being horizontal, and that changes the whole game. The weight of the robot becomes crucial because it must fight against gravity every moment to stay on the glass. This limits the amount of battery and cleaning solution the robot can carry on to the mission what will also limit the work capacity of the device as well.

The most obvious solution would be to use some kind of a suction power to ensure that the robot stays on the glass pane, but Windoro works in a different way. The device was developed in a joint program between Ilshim Global Corporation and the Pohang Institute of Intelligent Robotics (PIRO) and was first demonstrated at IFA in 2010. It consists of two separate units that go on either sides of the window pane while a permanent magnet is holding them together. Both sides are battery powered but they have different roles in the process: one of the unit is responsible for the movements of the robot while the other cleans the opposite side of the glass. When done, the two parts need to be swapped to get the other side of the window cleaned as well.
