Braava replaces Mint in North America

iRobot Braava 380t

It was less than a year and a half ago when iRobot announced the 7.5 million milestone in home robot sales, and now they are here again with an even better number to be loud about. The Bedford, Mass based robotic company has increased the accumulated sales figure by 33% in just 18 months to reach the 10 million mark this month.

iRobot Braava 320 and Braava 380 floor cleaning robots

iRobot Braava 320 & iRobot Braava 380

iRobot announced today that they will bring the Mint floor cleaners to Europe as Braava floor cleaning robots. The iRobot Braava 320 and the iRobot Braava 380 are the European siblings of the Mint (4200) and Mint Plus (5200) robots. I have reviewed the Braava 320 equivalent Mint in 2011, but my findings are still valid for the new iRobot Braava 320.

Snowplow competition

I have missed this in january, but the team of the Ohio University has won again on the Third Annual Autonomous Snowplow Competition. The idea behind this competition is to encourage teams of university or college students to design and build fully autonomous robots that can clean given areas from snow. Teams used all different kinds of technologies to navigate and control the route of the their robot plowers within the area, including GPS, lasers and ordinary webcams. M.A.C.S.

Grillbot

Grillbot

I guess we can all agree that the most hated part of barbecuing is when we have to clean the grill surface. As summer season is approaching it is nice to hear that the Grilbot that surfaced in the second part of last year is almost ready for prime-time. This little circular robot will scrub the burned grease off of the grill all by itself even if the grill is still hot.

Neato XV Signature and Signature Pro

Neato XV Signature

Neato Robotics has announced two new models of its XV robotic vacuum cleaner series. The Signature and Signature Pro robots come in a black finish and apart the new color and name they seem to be the same as the previously available models. They will obviously come with the latest firmware (v3.1) that sport a better algorithm to clean inner and outer corners.

Samsung Navibot as snow blower

Samsung Navibot as snow blower

Although winter is about to be over on the northern hemisphere readers in South America might be able to use this tip in the next few months to get rid of the snow from the walkway. All you need is a Samsung Navibot S SR8950 (or similar) vacuum cleaner and you are set. Detailed instructions are in the video.

Neato firmware upgrade 3.1

Neato Corner Clean introduced in firmware 3.1

Neato has finally published its long awaited new software for the popular XV series of vacuum cleaning robots. The 3.1 version of the software brings the missing corner cleaning feature that is called "Corner Clever" by Neato. This allows the robot to go all the way into the corners and back up before turning, what allows the robot to clean the floor closer into the corners. Neato XV models with the new 3.1 firmware will clean both inside and outside corners differently than before.

Ecovacs Deebot D735 and Winbot 7

Ecovacs Winbot 7

Ecovacs came with two new robots to the International CES this year. One of them, the Winbot 7 was only new to the US market, I have already seen it demoed at IFA a few months ago. It is a window cleaner robot that only needs to be attached to one side of the glass pane, it stays there with the power of vacuum. Cleaning is done with a damped and a dry microfiber cloth, and the robot can handle frameless windows as well. Winbot 7 runs on electricity provided via a power cord. In case of a power outage it can stay on the window for approximately half an hour.

Modular Robotics

Modular Robotics Cubelets

When I launched RobotBG.com I decided not to post about robotic toys because I wanted to concentrate on robots that serve a purpose. For first glance the Cubelets of Modular Robotics are simple toys, but I can see them as great educational tools. Each of these plastic cubes house one single functionality of a robot: there is one that holds the battery, another one has a motor and wheels, while there are others with Bluetooth module or thermo sensor.

iRobot Mint Plus (5200)

iRobot Mint+

I was secretly hoping that iRobot will bring a new version of the Mint mopping robot to Vegas, but I only found the Mint Plus (also known as Mint 5200) at iRobot's booth. Evolution Robotics, the original developer of the Mint robot line was acquired by iRobot in September 2012, and I hoped that this event had sped of the development of the Mint lineup. I was wrong. Instead of a new model, iRobot has integrated the Mint Plus and Mint II into their product portfolio, and offers the same old models that served home owners since the end of 2011.
