Hobot 168 window cleaning robot

It goes only on one side of the window, and it can also clean tiled walls.

It might looks ugly, but it is a hell of a great robot. Unlike Windoro, the Taiwanese window cleaner robot does not need a counter part on the opposite side of the window pane. Instead of using magnets Hobot 168 uses the power of vacuum to stay on the vertical surface. The robot touches the window with two rotating cleaning disks. When standing still, both disks create vacuum power and suck the robot onto the surface. When moving and cleaning, one disk stays still and slowly rotates the body around, while the other disk spins to clean the area around the fixed disk. When done, they switch and go to the next segment of the window. Using this movement technique the robot crawls and cleans the entire window.

Creating the suction power requires a lot of energy that the robot draws from a power adaptor instead of a built in battery. But it has to stay on the window even if the power goes out, therefore the Hobot 168 carries a decent size battery with itself to be able to keep the minimal amount of suction even when no electricity is coming from the main power supply. According to the manufacturer the robot can stay on the glass for approximately 30 minutes, so there is plenty of time to execute the rescue operation.

The Hobot 168 is also secured with a strong rope that acts as the second line of protection. It is important in places where the falling robot could cause huge damage or risk human life. It also comes handy in cases where the robot is stuck at an unreachable part of the window.

The hard part of the cleaning is done with two extra soft microfiber disks that are able to collect a huge amount of dirt.

The advantage of the vacuum technique over the magnetic solution is that it can stay on any window, independent from its thickness. Hobot is not yet available in the US, but it is on sale in some countries of Europe with a €300 price tag.
