Ecovacs didn't bring anything new to CES this year, I only found the refined, working versions of the robots that I have seen at IFA a few months ago.
I was lucky enough to see most of the new products of Ecovacs in Berlin in last September. The product line didn't change much since that. The most important product products are still the members of the Deebot D9 robotic vacuum cleaner family, that use a laser range finder similar to that of the Neato robots. The rotating head constantly measures the distance to the surrounding obstacles and draws a map based on this information and on those that come from the other sensors of the robot. This map is than used to systematically navigate within the house and clean the floor line after line. This product line is the first at Ecovacs that uses systematic navigation.
At this time the robot worked without glitches, and it really managed to cover the demo home. The interesting feature of the robot is the smartphone or tablet connectivity that allows the owner to check the process in real-time. The robot shows on the map where cleaning is done and where it still needs to go. We can even draw a line on the map that acts as a virtual wall to block the robot from the part of the house that is behind the wall. This requires us to roughly draw the map of the house, but it didn't seem to be a difficult task.
At IFA in Berlin the CEO of the company mentioned three model version of the D9 series, but this was reduced down to two. Here the demonstration was about the D93 and the D96 that both support the smartphone connection. The model without this feature was probably dropped. The D96 is basically the same as the D93, but it comes with the self emptying docking station that cleans the dust bin of the robot after each docking.
The other leading model was the Deebot D83 that draws the attention with the very elegant top plate. The randomly moving robot sports two side brushes, a main brush bar and a dust collecting microfiber mop plate. This latter one can also hold a damp cloth to provide a wet mopping as well. The robot also works without the brush bar in place. In this mode it is more ideal in houses where human or pet hair is a common challenge.
Thanks to its strong drive motors and rugged driving wheels the Ecovacs Deebot D83 can cross barriers up to 1.5 cm (1 in) height. Most of its competitors will stop and turn back if the doorsill is higher than 1.5 cm (0.6 in).
The third key product line at the Ecovacs booth was the Famibot telepresence robot series.
This allows family members away from home to videoconference with their loved ones and be with them in the house no matter where they go. The robot is also able to communicate with smart sensors and smart power outlets in the house, so it can alarm the home owners in case of an emergency and allow the home owner to switch devices on or off without being at home.
The robot is available in three versions (Famibot 586, Famibot 588 and Famibot Mini) that only differ in size and connectivity (Wifi, Wifi + 3G and 3G only respectively).
