IFA 2013: Moneual MR6800M

Korean robot maker Moneual has displayed a new concept in robotic floor cleaning at IFA this year. The new Moneual MR6800M is a regular vacuum cleaner with an extra microfiber cloth attachment on the bottom. This by itself should not be very exciting since these kind of add-ons have been around for a while but Moneual decided to add a small water tank to the cloth holder, so the new robot not only vacuums and mops, but mops with a wet cloth.

The Moneual MR6800M is a randomly moving robot despite the interesting camera like opening on the top. As I was told that will not be on the final product and it is not a camera on the prototype either. The robot uses two side brushes (not attached on the displayed robots) to sweep the dirt towards the vacuum opening where a brush bar helps to lift the heavier debris. Remaining dust and stubborn dirt is collected by the wet microfiber cloth.

Of course when wet mopping is not necessary the robot can use the dry microfiber cloth as well to collect dust, or if cleaning the cloth is not your cup of tea than you can use disposable cloths as well. Cleaning cloths are larger than what I have seen on robots before. This might seems like an advantage (and it could be), but as I experienced with the Mint robot usually the first inch or two of the cloth towards the front is what gets dirty the most. Therefore the rest of the cloth is pretty much redundant.

With the cloth holder attached the robot avoids carpet. To use on the carpet the cloths and the holder pad must be removed.

The MR6800M runs for 50 minutes with one charge while cleans approximately 90 sq m (978 sq ft). It runs in wave, tornado and zig-zag patterns, so it is basically a randomly moving robot. Other specs of the robot are promising, especially the 0.6 l (20 fl oz) dust bin, the 1400 mAh LiFePO4 battery and the queiter brushless electric motors. While it seems to be a decent robot, I still believe that the €499 price is a little bit high for a randomly moving robot.
