Neato firmware upgrade 3.1

Neato Corner Clean introduced in firmware 3.1

Neato has finally published its long awaited new software for the popular XV series of vacuum cleaning robots. The 3.1 version of the software brings the missing corner cleaning feature that is called "Corner Clever" by Neato. This allows the robot to go all the way into the corners and back up before turning, what allows the robot to clean the floor closer into the corners. Neato XV models with the new 3.1 firmware will clean both inside and outside corners differently than before. The new firmware includes all the previously published improvements, like the spot cleaning, the optimized navigation, the fringe detection and the steady docking feature.

The other notable difference is that now the software update is available on Mac OS X as well. Supported os versions are XP, Vista and 7 from Windows (no Windows 8) and 10.6.8, 10.7.5 and 10.8.2 from Mac OS. The update is available at Neato's official website.

Update (2013/01/22 22:00:00): I've run a quick test of the new firmware, and here are my findings.
The upgrade process went smoothly on my OS X 10.6.8 MacBook Pro. My only problem was that my Neato XV-11 forgot the battery level and the time when I turned the robot off before connecting it to the computer (I guess I shouldn't have done that). The upgrader said that the process can take up to 10 minutes, but mine finished the whole procedure in about one minute.
In my quick test I have dredged some flout into an area with an inside and outside corner next to each other. I have taped the clean robot with the firmware 2.6 vacuuming the corners, then cleaned the robot upgraded to firmware 3.1, and run the test again with a fresh flour cover. The difference between the two are shown on the animation below.

Neato firmware 2.6 vs. 3.1

While the new firmware helps the XV-11 to do a better job at the inside corners, the it become worse at the outside corners. Due to the lack of side brushes, it will still leave 5 cm (2 in) on the side and 4 cm (1.6 in) on the front of the robot dirty along the walls.

Notice how it takes about 60% longer to clean the corners with the new firmware installed.
