Modular Robotics Cubelets

When I launched RobotBG.com I decided not to post about robotic toys because I wanted to concentrate on robots that serve a purpose. For first glance the Cubelets of Modular Robotics are simple toys, but I can see them as great educational tools. Each of these plastic cubes house one single functionality of a robot: there is one that holds the battery, another one has a motor and wheels, while there are others with Bluetooth module or thermo sensor.

After putting these cubes together they can perform some very interesting tasks, like moving forward when temperature increases, or backing up when something gets in close proximity. The $160 starter kit includes six Cubelets (battery, motor/wheels, light, distance sensor, light sensor and a passive block), but the system consists of 16 different modules.

The main disadvantage of the system is price. The starter kit is pretty affordable, but to construct more complicated and sophisticated robots we need to spend quite a bit of money. But that could be justified in schools where dozens of kids can learn the basics of robotics with a single set.
