LG Hom-Bot Square arrived to the US

The news that LG brings the Hom-Bot Square to CES just arrived before the show. Although I have seen the robot in a private presentation at IFA in last September, I went to see it again.

Since IFA, the Hom-Bot Square went on sale in France and Italy, and those who know French (or likes to use Google translate) can already read a great review about it at Kelrobot.

The interesting part of the Hom-Bot is the new rounded sqare design that allowed the engineers to put the side brushes significantly closer to the front. This increases the robot's ability to clean corners, so no more hideaways for dust bunnies.

LG Hom-Bot Square is available in two versions but the two only differs in the types of bundled brushes. In the more expensive package the manufacturer has added and extra brush that is specially designed for carpet. This brings the the LG Hom-Bot into the group of universally usable floor cleaning robots.

The navigation system did not change a lot since 2009. Although the top camera's low light performance was improved in the Square this camera and the optical sensor on the bottom provide the main feedback to support the accelerometer, gyroscope and distance meters. Most of the changes in recent years have happened in the distribution and direction of the ultrasonic distance sensors to fine tune the obstacle avoidance and to minimize blind spots.

The LG Hom-Bot Square will be available in the US from March for about $800, although with this pricetag it will not be very competitive on the market of cheaper Roomba and Neato robots. There was not a single person on LG's exhibition area who could tell us a word about the expansion of the European distribution.
