Robo TAP Cleaner - Electroux Design Lab 2011 finalist

Every year Electrolux invites design students from all over the world to enter their product ideas in a design competition. Electrolux Design Lab 2011 is the ninth in the series, and has 'Intelligent Mobility' as a theme. The jury from Electrolux selected 8 entries out of the 1300 submitted to the competition this year. One of the 8 finalist is a robotic vacuum cleaner.
Gyu Ha Choi, from Handong Global University (South Korea) designed a robot that can be controlled by taping the floor. Two taps on the dirty area tells the robot where to clean, while another two cancels this order. With three more taps the owner could send the robot back to its original task.
Of course this system requires controlling device attached to the shoe of the operator, and an indoor positioning system that helps the robot to navigate.

Electrolux is one of the pioneering company in robotic home appliances, but after creating two of the revolutionary Trilobite robots several years ago, it went on hiatus. The selection of this entry to compete in the final round could show Electrolux's renewed interest in robotic vacuum cleaning. Currently Electrolux is in the robotic arena with its Husqvarna brand.

The first three designs will be announced in London, September 7, 2011. The first prize is €5,000 and a six-month paid internship at Electrolux, while second and third price winners will get €3,000 and €2,000 respectively. See the other 7 contestants at Electrolux Design Lab's website.
